New Alzheimer’s criteria brings hope for better diagnosis and treatment

Unlike many other health problems in this nation, such as high cholesterol or heart disease, Alzheimer’s has no clear guidelines or treatments. And like so many diseases, Alzheimer’s is dealt with best when early warning signs are clearly tested for, diagnosed and treated consistently.

For all of the above reasons, that is why new diagnostic guidelines are being proposed by the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association.

With over 5 million people in the United States living with Alzheimer’s – and over 20 million more across the globe – diagnosing the disease is imperative to getting proper treatment. A late diagnosis or inconsistent treatment can hasten the effects of the wasting disease.
