Motor Trend magazine has tabbed the redesigned Cadillac CTS as its Car of the Year. The award is one of the most coveted in the auto industry, and a huge boost for Cadillac as the CTS is just arriving in showrooms. In selecting the CTS, Motor Trend cited the car’s excellent powertrains, smooth ride and sporty handling.

Some of the other autos in the competition included the BMW 4 Series, Mazda3, Mazda6, Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Kia Forte. Only new or significantly redesigned vehicles were eligible. Car were judged on six categories: Design advancement, engineering, efficiency, safety, value and performance.

The CTS was released earlier this year to sterling reviews. It sports a variety of engine options, including a 272-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder power plant, a 321-horsepower V6 and a 420-horsepower turbocharged V6. The CTS is also the first Cadillac to offer an eight-speed transmission.

The CTS starts at $46,000.

Last year’s Motor Trend Car of the Year winner was the Tesla Model S.
