LG Unveils 77″ Ultra-HD Curved OLED TV

Hot on the heels of Samsung’s similarly giant announcement, LG reveals what it claims is the world’s largest curved OLED TV. Measuring 77 inches from corner to corner, the TV, which uses cutting edge OLED screen technology for the sharpest, most responsive and richest viewing experience possible, goes one better than the company’s current curved 55-inch flagship.

As well as incredible colors, one of the biggest benefits of OLED technology is that manufacturers are not confined to rigid, flat screen shapes and sizes, and bending the screen so that it wraps around the viewer, filling his or her peripheral vision as well as the direct line of sight, is the closest many consumers will come to having an IMAX experience in their own living room.

But, perhaps most impressively of all is that this is an ultra high definition OLED set and so (once sufficient native content exists) can screen still and moving images at four times the resolution of high definition. The original 55-inch curved OLED set, on which this big brother is based, won the 2013 Red Dot design award and on this evidence, there’s every possibility that LG will bag the same award again next July.

LG Unveils 77

On Thursday evening, Samsung revealed a giant, 98-inch LED LCD television and announced that an even larger 110-inch version would also be going into production. It also hinted that it too would be showing an OLED television on its exhibitor’s stand during the IFA consumer electronics conference, though it would not give any further details.

Neither company has confirmed either official launch dates for their giant TVs or their suggested retail prices, but expect them to be similarly huge in size.
