President Ford’s Compound In Ranch Mirage Hits The Market

A mid-century modern compound owned by the late President Gerald Ford has hit the market. The good people at Curbed bring word that Ford’s desert retreat in Rancho Mirage, California – found on the 13th fairway of the Thunderbird Country Club – can be yours for $1.699 million.

Shortly after completing his tenure as the 38th President of the United States, Ford and his first lady, Betty, commissioned the building of what would become their retirement home in Rancho Mirage, California on a 1.37 acre parcel that, as Curbed notes, was purchased from former ambassador and business magnate Leonard Firestone. To handle the design, the presidential couple tabbed celebrated architect Welton Becket (see: Capitol Records Building, Pauley Pavilion, Disney Resort), who devised a 6,316-square-foot single-story floor plan with a signature flat roof. The home offers a total of six bedrooms and four-and-a-half baths, his and hers offices, swimming pool, which Ford was said to have used daily, and wealth of natural light through skylights and other light-wells.

Sweetening the deal is possibility of negotiating the purchase of the home’s original furnishings, including, but not limited to a lime green-themed living room set, vintage brown bedroom set, Ford’s office desk, patio furniture and more. And if one presidential pad wasn’t enough, another of Ford’s properties, a 5,284-square-foot “official office” and “guard shack” of the former Commander in Chief, lies just up the road from his mod compound and is said to be available for $509,000.
