Well-known Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill designed a complex and fascinating summer house for his parents. Built on the ruins of an old country home, the Family House at the Empordà is located in Girona, a city in north-eastern Spain, in the Catalonia region. Spaces organized around a brightly red central courtyard capture different views of the pool, the vividly coloured dining room volume and surrounding hillside.

The two residential volumes shaping three storeys of private and entertaining space contain the living room, music room, master bedroom, bathroom and dressing room on the first floor, while the second floor is occupied by a library. The third floor shelters a playroom and a sitting room – here is where the architecture presented and opportunity to be connected to the bright red pool via a beautiful arrangement of exterior stairs. Five independent guest volumes – each containing a bedroom with bathroom – complete the interior spaces of this astonishing property.

One of the oldest materials used in pottery served as exterior decoration – dark grey earthenware covers the pavilions and constructs the perfect setting for the decorative red tile covering the dining room volume. You’re invited to enjoy the exquisite details in the pictures below.
