A defining feature of today’s dream home is its fascinating panoramic view over Pacific Ocean seen from a relatively flat corner lot in Aptos, California. Known as the Zeidler Residence, the modern house spreading over 3,500 square feet is home to a retired couple with grown children.

Ehrlich Architects imagined the modern residence as made of a two-part structure on either side of a sheltered courtyard. The main living spaces on the ocean side accommodate a double-height living zone with art walls and glass sliding doors opening to the outside, a study at the mezzanine level, a master wing with striking views, a kitchen, dining and living room and a full-sized roof deck with a built-in barbecue and fireplace – all captured within a two and a half story volume. The basement features a wine-tasting room and utility spaces, completing the space arrangement.

The secondary guest volume shelters three separate living zones for visiting family and guests, as well as the garage. A compact staircase of steel and walnut makes the connection between floors, uniting social and private spaces under a modern roof.
