Peugeot has announced a new premium model for its 508 series aimed at taking on a ‘green’ upmarket audience. The new Peugeot 508 RXH, unveiled July 11 but set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, follows the launch of Peugeot’s 508 Saloon and SW models earlier this year but has been repositioned as a top-of-the-range model.

This means an altered stance, with the model both raised and widened, with distinctive LED running lights adding to the model’s striking profile.

It uses the same diesel-hybrid ‘HYbrid4’ engine found in the soon-to-be-launched 3008, says Peugeot, although for the first time it includes a four-wheel drive mode, a first for a diesel-electric engine.

The 2.0-liter hybrid drivetrain delivers a maximum power of 147kW (200bhp) and offers a fuel efficiency of less than 4.2l/100km, although it can also run on a 100 percent electric mode for short distances.

Inside, as one would expect of a model designed to take on upmarket models such as the Audi A4 allroader or A6, no interior expense has been spared for the 508 RXH, with electric front seats, head up display, a panoramic glass roof and a “latest generation” audio and satellite navigation unit all coming as standard, along with “premium quality” upholstery.

Detailed specifications including price are set to be announced later this year when the model debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which runs September 15-25 in Germany.

Availability is set for next spring.
