Ever since Ford divested itself of Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin, they’ve had the money, time and energy to focus on the Lincoln lineup. After launching the MKZ to mixed reviews, the MKC small crossover was a home run and the recently debuted MKX looks to be a winner as well.

But all of those cars were just the warm-up act for this: The new Continental. Making its debut this week at the New York Auto Show, this concept car is very close to production-ready and is the car Lincoln must build to regain its stature among luxury brands.

While Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus seem happy to slug it out in the high-performance sedan arena, Lincoln is clearly aiming for a more relaxed experience. Ford CEO Mark Fields explains, “The Continental Concept showcases the promise of quiet luxury from Lincoln going forward. It also is a strong indication of what’s to come next year as we introduce our new Lincoln Continental full-size luxury sedan.”

Interesting features we see at a glance include hidden-door handles, an LED headlamp and front grill design that echo the shape of the Lincoln crest, 21-inch wheels and an overall smooth design. The car is said to be powered by a 3.0 L twin turbo EcoBoost Engine with Lincoln’s drive control adjustable suspension. The interior looks both roomy and comfortable and will feature the new Revel premium audio system.

We’ll have more details on this and other new car introductions from the New York Auto Show on Wednesday and Thursday.
