On November 21, 2014, it was announced that an East Hampton’s great estate, Briar Patch is being offered for sale. It is one of the most historic properties on East Hampton, and certainly one of the most expansive– over 11 acres, with a ¼ mile waterfront on Georgica Pond. It has two classic Peter Marino residences, and has been owned by just three families in its 80-year history, and is on the National Register Of Historic Places.

It is on the market for $140M, and is the home of entrepreneur Chris Whittle.  It is reportedly the most expensive property currently on the market in The Hamptons.

With 1,156 feet of waterfront along the shore of Georgica Pond, Briar Patch enjoys panoramic views across the pond and toward the Atlantic Ocean. Century-old sycamores, beech and linden trees are part of the landscape, with a private pond, woodland, and expanses of lawn. This vegetation affords great privacy as well as sanctuary for swans, egrets, ospreys, and the occasional eagle.

Created in 1931 by the original architect, Arthur C. Jackson, Briar Patch was built on a knoll. During the Hurricanes of 1938 and Sandy in 2012, Briar Patch stood safely above the ocean surges.

Every detail of the Georgian Revival, 6-bedroom, 10,000-square-foot main house was restored and renovated over two-and-a-half years by the internationally renowned architect Peter Marino. It is now graced with two-foot-wide reclaimed floorboards, handmade wallpaper, hand-stenciled or trayed ceilings, and four fireplaces. All of the ground-floor rooms enjoy French doors leading to expansive porches.

The 3,500-square-foot, four-bedroom guesthouse with a double-height master bedroom is completely private and has its own entrance drive. The property also includes a sunken tennis court, beautiful teak-bordered pool, hot tub, and third-floor gym with sea views.

The property is subdivided into two buildable lots with building envelopes beyond the ample structures that currently exist, permitting the construction of a private art gallery, conservatory, spa/gymnasium or expanded residence for guests or extended family. East Hampton Airport, with private transport by helicopter and jet, is less than ten minutes away.

Peter M. Turino, President of Brown Harris Stevens of the Hamptons, is the exclusive listing broker: “Briar Patch is a uniquely beautiful estate without equal on the East End. Its setting and scale will appeal to the most sophisticated and discerning of buyers.”
