How appropriate. During the premiere of The Bling Ring at the Cannes Film Festival, jewels worth more than $1 million were stolen from of a Chopard employee’s hotel room at the Novotel hotel. The jeweler redesigned the Palme d’Or trophy and each year lends out jewelry to stars for their walk up the red-carpeted steps at the Palais des Festivals. Famous for a backdrop of an azure-blue sea, luxury yachts and champagne parties, Cannes lures thousands of actors, directors, producers and movie buyers. Since the jewel heist, security in the streets and hotels is very high.

Ironically, the new film from director Sofia Coppola centers around the true events of California high-school students who find out when celebrities, from Paris Hilton to Orlando Bloom, are attending red carpet events in order to break into their homes and steal their designer clothes, bags and shoes.

At Cannes, according to the BBC:

The jewels were to be loaned to celebrities who have arrived on the French Riviera for the famous annual film festival. They were stolen from a safe in the Novotel Hotel room of an employee of exclusive Swiss jewellers Chopard. Chopard is one of the official sponsors of the festival, which opened on Wednesday.

“I loved The @BlingRingMovie! Sofia Coppola is such a talented director. @EmWatson and the rest of the cast were amazing! #AMustSeeFilm.”

After hitting The Bling Ring after-party, Paris also stated via Twitter and Instgram that she’d met “one of my idols.” Nope, it wasn’t a filmmaker, it was “the amazing Christian Louboutin #Legend #Icon #RedBottoms,” The shoe designer also got a shout-out in the film.
